The Dragonboat Palio in Bardolino is an event rooted in a millenary legend. It is said that over 2000 years ago, the Chinese poet and statesman Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mi-Luo River in protest. Fishermen, in search of his body, used large boats, warding off fish with the sound of oars.

Today, this tradition is revived in a spectacular sports competition. The origins of the Dragon Boat date back to southern China, around 500 BC, with regulated competitions already during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The discipline has evolved into an international sport in 1976, thanks to the HKTA of Hong Kong.

The standard boats, 12.40 meters long and 1.12 meters wide, are decorated with dragon heads and tails. Twenty athletes push the boats to the rhythm of a drummer, while a helmsman steers the boat with an oar of about 3 meters. An event that combines history, sport and folklore on the shores of Lake Garda.
