Historical re-enactment of the vows of S. Abbondio in Dro: a journey into the past

The village of Dro, in the heart of Garda Trentino, is preparing to relive a historical event of great importance: the re-enactment of the vows of S. Abbondio, also known as the 12 Saturdays. From May 22 to 24, 2026, the village will come alive with historical re-enactments, engaging concerts, historical readings for children and a suggestive historical dinner, offering an immersive experience in local tradition.

It was back on January 31, 1632, when the community of Dro, escaped from the plague epidemic of 1630, made a solemn vow to God and Saints Sebastian and Rocco. This vow included abstaining from work every first Saturday of the month for an entire year, accompanied by a procession and a mass in the small church of Sant’Abbondio. Donna Fior, a local noblewoman, bequeathed the means to offer food to the poor of Dro and Ceniga at the end of the procession.

Since 1993, the Circolo Culturale Amici dell’Oratorio, in collaboration with the Municipality’s Department of Culture, has been re-proposing this popular festival to rediscover the roots and faith of the ancestors. The event, an expression of deep devotion, highlights the importance of work and respect for holidays in local culture. A unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and traditions of this fascinating corner of Garda Trentino, not far from Arco and Riva del Garda.
