The two-act adaptation, directed by Mariarosa Maniscalco, promises to revive the atmosphere and social dynamics typical of Goldoni’s famous text.
As Strehler pointed out, “Il Campiello” explores the relationship between a rooted community and external figures, the “foresti”. In this context, the locals defend their identity, rejecting those who try to fit in without understanding the rules. The campiello belongs to the people, a matriarchal space where young women live on balconies and the street is the domain of men and mothers.
The play stages the dynamics, exchanges, jealousies, and unwritten rules of this microcosm, where even a simple gesture like the exchange of a flower between Gnese and Lucietta requires male mediation. The Neapolitan knight, a generous and curious figure, seeks acceptance through his gifts, bringing an ephemeral breath of carnival into a reality otherwise marked by indigence. However, even his presence remains in the balance, suspended between integration and estrangement.
