The Blue Line of Upper Garda: A Journey Through History

Immerse yourself in a unique historical itinerary that traces the Blue Line, the 1945 front line, winding from the picturesque Riva del Garda lakefront to the slopes of the majestic Monte Altissimo, near Torbole sul Garda. This route will lead you along a part of the fortified line, ingeniously built by the German armed forces between 1944 and the spring of 1945, connecting Lake Garda to the Adriatic.

The Blue Line, inspired by the Austro-Hungarian defensive works of the previous century, strategically fortified the coast from Riva to Torbole, the western Gardesana south of Riva, and the slopes of Altissimo, the site of intense firefights. The itinerary is divided into two fascinating sections: the first starts from the heart of Riva del Garda and extends along the lakefront to the east, while the second starts from Torbole and climbs towards Busatte and Nago.

Points of Interest:

  • World War II bunkers
  • Forte San Nicolò (connectable to the “I Forti del Monte Brione” itinerary)
  • Galleria Adige-Garda, once home to Messerschmidt military factories
  • Trenches and military posts visible along the route

This loop trail offers breathtaking views and an immersion in history, with refreshment points along the way to regenerate. Ideal for history and nature enthusiasts!
