Molière’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself at Sant’Eufemia Cloister

Verona’s summer season is enriched by a captivating theatrical event, courtesy of the La Pocostabile Theater Company. From June 30th to July 6th, the evocative cloister of Sant’Eufemia will host a performance of Molière’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself, directed by Lucia Ruina and Mario Peretti.

This celebrated comedy functions like a clockwork mechanism, expertly built on misunderstandings, disguises, and a relentless pace. At the heart of the story is Sganarello, a lazy woodcutter whose penchant for wine leads him to be mistaken for a distinguished physician by servants seeking help. To avoid a grim fate, the protagonist decides to play along, ironically stepping into the shoes of a doctor amidst a series of hilarious situations.

The intimate and historic atmosphere of the cloister provides the perfect setting to rediscover classic theater, which remains capable of provoking thought through physical comedy and the wit of the original text. It is a precious opportunity for anyone wishing to spend an evening immersed in culture in the city of Verona.
