The awakening of the ‘Garden of Europe’: why spring on Monte Baldo will leave you speechless

Don't just call it a mountain: welcome to the legendary flower-filled balcony overlooking the blue waters of Lake Garda.

There is a place where winter does not simply end, but transforms into an explosion of life that is unrivalled anywhere else on the continent. If you are looking for the perfect destination for your next spring getaway, set your compass towards the Veronese shore of Lake Garda. Here stands the majestic Monte Baldo, a mountain that is not just a geographical feature, but a veritable treasure trove of nature and panoramic views, nicknamed for centuries the “Garden of Europe”.

A record-breaking climate (and a health thermometer)

What makes Mount Baldo so special? Imagine a climate lift: you start at 89 metres above sea level on the shores of the lake, where the water acts as a natural air conditioner, creating a Mediterranean climate among the olive trees, and in a few minutes you reach over 2,000 metres above sea level on the ridges, where the air becomes alpine.

This incredible temperature range has made the mountain an “open-air laboratory”. Just think, almost 50% of all alpine flora is concentrated here!
But biodiversity is not just a word for scientists: it is our “thermometer” of environmental quality. The more species there are, the healthier nature is. And here on Mount Baldo, it is bursting with health.

Flora: native species and colourful carpets

Walking along the paths of Mount Baldo in spring is like leafing through a living botanical encyclopaedia. With 1,952 documented species, you will be spoilt for choice.

  • Exclusive species: there are plants that have chosen only this mountain to live on, such as Guenthera Repanda and Gypsophila papillosa. True endemic celebrities!
  • Each altitude has its own flower: in the lower reaches, you will walk among oak and chestnut trees. As you climb, the beech trees give way to mountain orchids, gentians, violets and peonies.
  • High altitude: once you reach 1,500 metres, you will be greeted by legendary edelweiss and majestic rhododendrons.

Smart tip: download a plant identification app. You will turn your trek into a botanical treasure hunt that is educational and great fun!

Fauna: whistles, flights and… some important encounters

Not just flowers! Monte Baldo is also teeming with wildlife. As you climb, listen carefully and you may hear a high-pitched whistle: it’s the more than 3,000 marmots that guard the trails!

  • The return of the kings: thanks to reintroduction projects, the golden eagle has returned to these skies along with peregrine falcons and eagle owls.
  • Close encounters: it is not uncommon to spot elegant chamois, deer or the shy roe deer. And if you are lucky (or very quiet), you may come across the tracks of a wolf or, rarely, a bear on a trip from the Brenta Dolomites.
  • Colourful wings: the atmosphere is made magical by countless species of butterflies, which dance among the flowers, colouring the sky.

A fragile treasure to be protected

Despite its visual power, this ecosystem is delicate. Global warming threatens rare species such as Kerner’s buttercup, which risks disappearing if temperatures rise too high.

How can we be better tourists?

  1. Choose off-peak times: if you can, visit Mount Baldo on weekdays. You will enjoy a mystical peace and give the mountain a breather.
  2. Respect the silence: the wildlife will thank you by showing itself more readily.
  3. Do not touch, just look: every flower picked is a piece of biodiversity lost.
  4. Do not leave rubbish behind, not even biodegradable tissues or fruit peelings.

How to reach paradise: 3 ways to climb to the top

Now that we have made you fall in love with the biodiversity of Mount Baldo, the legitimate question arises: how do we get up there? Whether you are a lover of technological thrills, a seeker of silence or nostalgic for vintage, there are three ‘magic doors’ that will take you from lake level to the peaks in the blink of an eye.

1. The Malcesine Cable Car: “The Rotating Dream”

This is not just a cable car, it is a record-breaking attraction. Located in Malcesine, on the Veronese shore, the valley station is a stone’s throw from the historic centre.

  • The wow effect: the second section (from San Michele to Monte Baldo) boasts 360° rotating cabins. As you ascend, the cabin slowly rotates on its axis: no matter where you are, you will have a complete panoramic view ranging from the intense blue of Lake Garda to the flower-covered peaks.
  • The numbers: you start at 90 metres and in about 15-20 minutes you will find yourself at an altitude of 1760 metres (Località Tratto Spino).
  • What to do when you arrive: in addition to taking photos from the “Belvedere” viewpoint, you can relax at the Skywalk Lounge Bar or stroll along flat paths that are perfect for families.
  • Expert tip: Be sure to book online (click here). You’ll save time (by avoiding endless queues) and a few pounds on your ticket!

2. Prà Alpesina chairlift: “The Gateway to the East”

If you prefer a more “alpine” and wild approach, head towards the Trentino side at Prà Alpesina (Avio). It is very easy to reach from the A22 motorway (Avio exit).

  • The experience: a modern chairlift that flies over the pastures in an almost mystical silence. In about 10 minutes, you will be immersed in unspoilt nature.
  • Who it is suitable for: it is the strategic point for those who want to quickly reach the main ridge and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Adige Valley. In spring, from here, access to the trails to the peaks is immediate and spectacular.
  • Once at the top, follow the trail north and in about half an hour you will arrive at Tratto Spino (the arrival point of the Malcesine cable car).

3. Prada – Costabella lifts: “The Vintage Adventure”

For those seeking direct (and somewhat romantic) contact with the mountain air, the right choice is Prada, in San Zeno di Montagna (VR).

  • Retro charm: here, the ascent is an experience from another era. The first section is a two-seater basket lift: you travel in open ‘baskets’ that allow you to breathe in the scent of the woods. The second section is a two-seater chairlift that takes you up to 1,850 metres.
  • What you will find: this is the least crowded and wildest area, ideal for trekking in solitude. The view here stretches across the lower Garda, with Sirmione and Bardolino looking as if they were drawn on the water.

Dress in layers: don’t be fooled by the warm spring sunshine on the shores! The temperature difference between the lake and the summit can exceed 10-15 degrees. Always bring a windbreaker and wear suitable hiking boots, even for the easiest trails.

Spring on Lake Garda is not just a season, it is a complete sensory experience. The scent of wild mint and chives, the contrast between the blue of the lake and the bright green of the beech woods; Monte Baldo awaits you to remind you how wonderful our planet is.

According to the art of onomancy, the meaning of my name is described as follows: "it lives in the woods, sylvan and wild". Sometimes fate knows the way before you, and forges you with the most akin experiences. I live on the balcony of Lake Garda in San Zeno di Montagna. Passionate about trekking, photography and writing, which I combine in small adventures.
