“The President” with Filippo Nigro at the Astra Theatre: An Intense Reflection on Power

The Cinema Teatro Astra in Verona hosts “The President” on March 13th at 9 PM, an intense theatrical work exploring the themes of power and ethics, starring Filippo Nigro. Adapted from Davide Carnevali’s “Confession of a Former President” and co-directed by Nigro and Fabrizio Arcuri, the play challenges the audience’s certainties through the story of a leader revealing his truth.

Initially conceived as an intimate confession, the narrative evolves into a complex game of manipulation and rhetoric, prompting viewers to reflect on the weaknesses of rulers and the responsibilities of those who elect them. This production, a collaboration between the CSS Teatro Stabile di Innovazione del FVG and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, offers an incisive political theater experience, capable of questioning the viewer’s convictions.

The show begins by breaking the barrier between stage and audience, with Filippo Nigro confidently entering the stage, accompanied by a bodyguard. At the center of the scene is the speech of an unnamed former President, who decides to share his version of events after leaving office. As he retraces the decisions made during his term, his confession turns into an ambiguous intertwining of truth, self-absolution, and manipulation.

Nigro involves the audience in an ongoing dialogue, alternating provocations and sudden changes of perspective. “The President” is part of an ideal trilogy that began with “Every Brilliant Thing,” focusing on a theatrical method that values the relationship with the audience. The participation of spectators becomes an integral part of the performance, making each performance a unique experience. Carnevali’s text, adapted to the Italian context, maintains a universal dimension, guiding the audience through a labyrinth of truth and fiction, theater and politics. The question remains: is the President’s confession an act of truth or a final manipulation?
