Alex Katz: La Vita Dolce at Mart, Rovereto

From May 15th to September 18th, 2022, the Mart in Rovereto hosted a splendid monographic exhibition dedicated to Alex Katz, one of America’s foremost living artists. Entitled ‘La Vita Dolce’ (The Sweet Life), the exhibition showcased over 40 large canvases celebrating the beauty of life through intensely colourful portraits and landscapes. Curated by Denis Isaia, with an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi, the exhibition offered an in-depth look at Katz’s artistic maturity, featuring works created from the 1990s onwards.

Often associated with Pop Art, Katz reinterprets elements of American mass culture, from television to cinema, filtering them through a minimalist approach. His ability to synthesise the best artistic experiences of the 20th century makes him a unique figure in the American post-war art scene.

‘La Vita Dolce’ highlighted Katz’s detachment from existentialist philosophies and political ambitions, focusing instead on celebrating beauty and affection. The exhibition was complemented by sketches, drawings, and videos, offering an immersive experience into the artist’s world. The catalogue, published by Sagep Editori, included texts by Vittorio Sgarbi and Alberto Fiz, further enriching the visitor’s experience.
