Antonio and Cleopatra: A Shakespearean Classic Reimagined in Verona

The theatrical art of William Shakespeare continues its dialogue with the present, and in Verona, this conversation takes a particularly captivating form. From May 14 to 17, 2026, the Teatro Satiro OFF will host “Antonio e Cleopatra”, a Casa Shakespeare production that promises to transport the audience into an intense, contemporary reinterpretation of one of the Bard’s most iconic dramas.

This performance, an integral part of the “Shakespeare 2026” festival and included within the Cultural Olympiad of Milan Cortina 2026, explores the dynamics of an overwhelming love, but does so through the lens of the modern star system. Imagine a dressing room, an illuminated mirror, actors transforming, and a relationship that, however private, inevitably becomes public, observed, an object of gossip and incessant conflict. The production, a “pop comedy” directed by Solimano Pontarollo, blends Elizabethan aesthetics with a surprisingly contemporary rhythm, creating an accessible and engaging experience of approximately fifty minutes.

The protagonists, Antonio and Cleopatra, are not merely historical figures, but become a mirror to another famous duo: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, two lovers whose passion was also constantly in the spotlight. The show delves not only into love, but also ego, betrayal, and seduction, portraying a volatile and fierce relationship where the comic and tragic merge. It is an emotional chronicle, almost a piece of gossip, inviting us to reflect on the power of passion and the fragility of human beings when every feeling is exposed to the world.
