The Mart in Rovereto hosted a solo exhibition dedicated to Carlo Benvenuto (Stresa, 1966), an artist capable of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. From June 27th to October 18th, 2020, approximately 60 works, including photographs, sculptures, and paintings, created a unique metaphysical composition, conceived by Vittorio Sgarbi and curated by Gianfranco Maraniello with Daniela Ferrari and Chiara Ianeselli.
Through a play of assonances and reflections, the exhibition revolved around a central room, the focal point of a dialogue between four variations of self-portrait. Common objects, silent protagonists of everyday life, were revealed as the heart of Benvenuto’s artistic research. Reproduced in real dimensions and decontextualised, these objects lost their practical function to transform into images of mysterious poetry, inviting the viewer to a profound reflection.
The exhibition was enriched by self-portraits of masters of the early twentieth century, such as Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, and Renato Guttuso, selected from the masterpieces of the Mart Collections, creating a fascinating dialogue between different eras and styles.
