The MITAG Italian War History Museum in Rovereto celebrates a forgotten Italian scientific expedition: the mapping of the Karakorum in 1929. From March 27th to September 13th, 2026, the exhibition “Karakorum 1929: The Suspended Enterprise” brings visibility back to one of the most relevant scientific endeavors of the Italian twentieth century.
Led by Aimone di Savoia-Aosta, the expedition aimed to map unexplored valleys and glaciers of the Karakorum. Despite the Italia airship disaster, the Italian government funded the operation, turning it into a monumental scientific undertaking. The results were exceptional: four detailed geographical maps, also used by Ardito Desio for the conquest of K2 in 1954.

The exhibition is enriched by the donation of the Giuseppe Chiardola Fund, with topographical maps, photographs, original instruments, and expedition equipment. These materials offer a basis for studying glacier changes and the global climate crisis. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (last entry at 5:00 pm). Admission is included in the MITAG ticket.
