“Nuts”: An Intense Drama at Mantua’s Teatro Sociale

The Teatro Sociale in Mantua hosts “Nuts”, a gripping play by Tom Topor, starring Vanessa Gravina and Nicola Rignanese. Directed and adapted by Fabrizio Coniglio.

The play, which originally premiered on Broadway in 1980 and was later adapted into a successful film starring Barbara Streisand and Richard Dreyfuss, tells the story of Claudia Draper, a high-class prostitute accused of murdering a client. To avoid a severe sentence, her wealthy family attempts to have her declared mentally incompetent, a strategy Claudia rejects outright.

Instead, she decides to trust a public defender who recognises her intelligence and ability to assist in her defence. Through a painful narrative, Claudia unveils her family’s secrets and the dynamics that led to her chosen life, revealing the intolerable demands of the client that triggered her defensive reaction. “Nuts” tackles significant and timely issues such as violence against women, family secrets, and the struggle to be understood and accepted for who you are, prompting a deep reflection on the female condition and the need to combat all forms of violence and discrimination.
