Tempo d’Orchestra: Bach and Weinberg Meet in Mantua

The renowned cellist Mario Brunello returns to Mantua for a unique musical event: “Tempo d’Orchestra, La Giusta Distanza” (Orchestra Time, The Right Distance).

The program juxtaposes Johann Sebastian Bach, a pivotal figure in music history, with Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a lesser-known but highly intriguing composer. The aim isn’t to amplify the contrasts between the two, but to celebrate the expressive possibilities of the cello.

Bach’s Suites continue to astonish with their inventive variety and the measured tension between technique and poetry. Weinberg regards Bach from “the right distance”, creating sonatas characterised by suspended and tormented images, reflecting his troubled life while celebrating the instrument.

According to Brunello, the concert is “a relay race between two composers who opened up unimaginable paths, created metaphysical architectures, and continue to be meteors travelling into the future”.
