The Winter of Democracy: Sport, Peace, and Rights in Trento

In the heart of Trento, an event to reflect on the power of sport as a tool for peace and dialogue in a world marked by conflict. The event, entitled ‘The Winter of Democracy,’ will be held on Saturday, February 14th at 6:00 PM at Spazio Ex Niccolini in Piazza Cesare Battisti.

The event will feature prominent figures such as Francesca Melandri, a writer committed to social and political issues, Nicola Sbetti, a sports history expert from the University of Bologna, and Alessandra Campedelli, a volleyball coach with international experience in the Iranian and Pakistani women’s national teams. Marco Odorizzi, director of the Fondazione Trentina Alcide De Gasperi, will moderate the discussion.

The focus will be on the role of sport as constructive competition, in contrast to the logic of conflict. In a global context marked by tensions and wars, the discussion will centre around whether the Olympic spirit can inspire more effective diplomatic scenarios and promote human rights. It’s an opportunity to explore the link between sport, society, and politics in the evocative setting of Trento, a city steeped in history and culture, much like a modern-day Olympia for intellectual discourse.
