Verona’s Gnocolar Friday: A Centuries-Old Tradition

On February 13, 2026, Verona prepares to celebrate the 496th Gnocolar Friday, the highlight of the Carnival of Verona. This festival has its roots in a past rich in history and tradition, with origins dating back to 1531, during a period of severe famine.

The figure of Tommaso Da Vico, considered the father of the Carnival of Verona, emerges in this context. It is said that, on his deathbed, Da Vico ordered the free distribution of bread, wine, butter, flour and cheese to the inhabitants of San Zeno, one of the poorest districts of the city, during the last Friday of Carnival. Since then, the Carnival has spread to all districts of Verona, each with its own mask, often inspired by historical figures or traditional trades.

The most iconic mask is undoubtedly Papà del Gnoco, whose feast day coincides with the main Carnival parade. This year, coinciding with the closing ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics at the Arena, the parade route will undergo some changes. The grand parade will start at 1:45 PM from Piazza Luigi Cadorna, crossing Ponte della Vittoria, Via Armando Diaz, Corso Cavour and Corso Castelvecchio, then continuing towards Largo Don Bosco, Via San Zeno in Oratorio, Regaste San Zeno, Piazzetta Portichetti, Via San Giuseppe, Piazza Corrubbio and Piazza Pozza, finally ending in Piazza San Zeno, after crossing Via Porta San Zeno.
