Caravaggio. The Contemporary in Rovereto: A Dialogue Between Past and Present

Event Details

  • 📅 Start Date: 04/12/2020
  • 🔚 End Date: 13/12/2026
  • 📍 Location: Rovereto

The Mart in Rovereto hosted the exhibition “Caravaggio. The Contemporary,” an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi that highlighted the spiritual influence of the 17th-century master on contemporary art. The exhibition created a fascinating dialogue between Caravaggio’s works and a selection of contemporary works and photographs.

Until December 4, 2020, visitors were able to admire “The Burial of Saint Lucy”, Michelangelo Merisi’s first Sicilian work, known as Caravaggio, from the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia in Syracuse. Subsequently, the exhibition continued with the addition of “Maddalena”, from a private London collection.

The work “The Burial of Saint Lucy” was placed alongside precious works by Alberto Burri, a master of Informal Art, creating a continuous reference between images, symbols and affinities. Completing the exhibition were the large painting “The Shipwrecked” (1934) by Cagnaccio di San Pietro, the works of the artist Nicola Verlato and the photographer Massimo Siragusa, and some photographs on the life and death of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Two curtain-raiser works, one by Hermann Nitsch and one by Margherita Manzelli, further enriched the experience. At the entrance, a painting by Andrea Facco inspired by Caravaggio’s “Beheading of Saint John the Baptist” welcomed visitors.

The exhibition was accompanied by videos and online guided tours, offering insights with Vittorio Sgarbi and curator Denis Isaia. A unique opportunity to explore the link between Caravaggio and contemporary art.
