From September 20, 2025, to March 22, 2026, the Po River Museum in Revere (Borgo Mantovano, Mantua) will host Erik Messori’s photographic exhibition dedicated to Matilde di Canossa, a symbolic figure of the European Middle Ages. A visual journey that intertwines past and present, through images that tell the stories, places, and memories of the Great Countess, from her hometown of Mantua to Rome.
The exhibition, enriched by a calendar of meetings and collateral events, restores the relevance of an extraordinary woman, a bridge between eras and cultures. Matilde, a woman of the past, an icon in the present. Sovereign of a vast territory that stretched from Mantua to Lucca, crossing the Reggio Emilia Apennines and the Garfagnana, her inclination to command and diplomatic skills, or her faith, absolute devotion to the Papacy and close ties with the Empire, attention to the weak, peasants, women, and, not least, her passion for the arts and knowledge of languages, have been highlighted from time to time.
Certainly, one of the most fascinating and relevant personalities of Italy and Europe in the Middle Ages. A woman who symbolized balance, the fulcrum between the Pope and the Emperor during the struggle for investitures that would open the way for the birth of the age of the Communes. Her life is therefore located at a crucial juncture in the Middle Ages, where one world ends and a new one is born, and in which Matilde plays a fundamental role. A complex figure, Matilde, who over the centuries has never ceased to fascinate and intrigue. Enterprising, courageous, forward-looking, she casts a timeless bridge between her era and the contemporary world.
In the places, gestures, and rituals that still recur in her ancient lands. Her myth has transcended the centuries and permeates the territories and the collective imagination so incisively that it is still perpetually present in numerous studies, research, and conferences, but also in many occasions of discovery and promotion of the fiefs she administered. Yet new paths still appear unexplored. And here is an original and unusual point of view that guides us to enter the articulated world of the Great Countess. The photographer’s gaze leads us, so lucid and disenchanted that it becomes surreal. Erik Messori’s images reveal stories and encounters, gestures and landscapes until they transpose them and turn them into characters. The light stops time and amplifies it, connecting the past and the present that seem to almost touch each other within the same photo.
