Rediscovering the Baroque: The Gaspare Antonio Baroni Cavalcabò Exhibition in Rovereto

The Museo della Città in Rovereto celebrates Gaspare Antonio Baroni Cavalcabò, a prominent figure of the Trentino Baroque, with the exhibition “L’artista ritrovato. Gaspare Antonio Baroni Cavalcabò e il barocco in Vallagarina” (The Rediscovered Artist. Gaspare Antonio Baroni Cavalcabò and the Baroque in Vallagarina). Curated by art historians Alice Salavolti and Dario De Cristofaro, the exhibition presents previously unseen and forgotten works, the result of careful research and rediscovery of this prolific artist, born in Sacco (Rovereto) in 1682 and trained in Venice and Rome under masters such as Antonio Balestra and Carlo Maratti.

Baroni Cavalcabò left an indelible mark on the Vallagarina, decorating churches and palaces with canvases and frescoes that made him the leading figure of the local Baroque. The exhibition encourages a “widespread” journey, inviting visitors to discover the artist’s works in their original contexts, among churches and palaces in the Vallagarina. An opportunity to deepen the knowledge of Baroni Cavalcabò independently or through guided tours organised by the Fondazione Museo Civico. It’s akin to finding a lost Rembrandt in a small village church.

The exhibition is promoted by the Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto, the Municipality of Rovereto, the Comunità della Vallagarina, and the Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati, with the patronage of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Apt of Rovereto, Vallagarina and Monte Baldo. A must-see event for lovers of Baroque art and local history.
