Pieve sits high above the western shore of Lake Garda, on the plateau of Tremosine sul Garda. You reach it by climbing from the lakeside road, and the best-known way up is the Strada della Forra (the gorge road), which threads through tunnels and tight bends before the rock opens onto the plateau. Pieve is the main village of the district and one of the few on the lake counted among Italy’s most beautiful villages. On an evening in late August the Pro Loco Tremosine (the local tourist association) stages Vita nei Borghi (life in the villages): the food stands take over the two central squares, Piazza Marconi and Piazza Cozzaglio, and live music fills the lanes until late.
The evening in the village
The centre of Pieve is small and walkable, and that is the first thing you notice on the night: cars stay at the edges, at the Piazza Fossato car park and the village entrances, and the lanes go back to people on foot. Stone houses, the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, tables laid out in front of the doorways: the whole festival sits within a few dozen paces from one stand to the next. You move from one square to another with a glass in your hand.
The music
The music is spread across four fixed points around the village: a DJ, two bands and a saxophonist, set among the squares and lanes. You are the one who moves between them. It starts early: at 7.30 pm the live music begins in the square where the spit-roast (spiedo bresciano) turns, so you eat with the playing already under way. The other three points start at 9 pm and carry the evening on into the night. Times and locations for each set are in the panel below.
What to eat
The food is that of the plateau, and it begins with cheese. The Tremosine producers bring the formaggella di Tremosine, made with milk from the cows that graze up here; the same cheese returns in the filling of tortei alla formagella (cheese-filled pasta) served in butter, and in the polenta cùsa, polenta enriched with melting cheese. The Gruppo Alpini (the local Alpine veterans’ association) look after the spiedo bresciano, meat threaded onto slowly turning spits over the embers and served with polenta. From the lake comes sisàm, fish with onions; alongside are lucanica sausage with frankfurters, boards of cured meats and grandmother’s puddings. To drink, there are the wines of the Brescia side of Garda, the Garda Bianco and the Garda Classico Rosso, the Rebo del Benaco, with draught beer, prosecco and grappa.

The Prolochini, how the evening works
There are no euros at the stands. The currency for the night is the Prolochino: you buy it in packs of ten, ten euros a pack, and you pay for your food and drink with it. You can get it at the event tills, or reserve it online and collect it at the dedicated desk in the half hour before the stands open. Buy as many as you like.
Three things to keep in mind. Prolochini are valid for this evening only: they are not refunded at the end of the night and cannot be spent at future editions. The old Europoldo currency, used in previous years, is no longer valid and cannot be exchanged. And because there is no way to know how many people will come up, the stands have no fixed closing time and a dish may run out before the night is over, so if there is something you particularly want, come early.
Getting there and where to park
Pieve is the main village of Tremosine sul Garda, on the Brescia-side plateau that closes the lake to the west. You come up from the lakeside road, and the finest way is the Strada della Forra, six kilometres cut into the rock along the Brasa stream, narrow and full of bends, which ask for patience and a little time. On the night, cars are left at the edge of the village, at the Piazza Fossato car park and the entrances, a few minutes on foot from the centre.
Common questions
Do I need to book to get in? No, entry to the village is free. Booking online is only for the Prolochini, which you then collect ready at the dedicated desk.
Can I pay cash at the stands? No, the stands take Prolochini only. Euros are for buying the tokens at the tills.
Can I get a refund on unused Prolochini? No, they are non-refundable and not valid at future editions.
When do the stands close? There is no set time, and they may close once the food runs out.
Can I take food away? Yes, but the organisers do not provide containers, so bring your own if you plan to.
