1943. The Choice: An Exhibition at the Italian War History Museum in Rovereto

The MITAG Italian War History Museum in Rovereto hosts the temporary exhibition “1943. The Choice,” a deep dive into the complex decisions Italians faced after September 8, 1943. With the armistice signed by the Badoglio government, Italians had to choose between continuing to fight alongside the Germans, abandoning arms and facing imprisonment, or joining the partisan forces.

Through the biographies of over thirty witnesses, the exhibition explores the various possibilities that arose at that crucial moment. Memories, letters, relics, and documents preserved by the MITAG War Museum in Rovereto offer an in-depth look at the complexity of that historical period. The stories of combatants for the Italian Social Republic and the Kingdom of the South, partisans, prisoners, and military internees intertwine, revealing the consequences of personal choices that shaped Italian history.

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (last admission at 5:00 pm). Closed on non-holiday Mondays, December 24, 25, 31, and January 1. Admission is included in the museum ticket and is free for Museum Pass holders.
