Summer evenings when the square becomes a stage

When the heat eases, the squares of Lake Garda's small towns fill with live music. Open-air concerts, run by the local councils and tourist associations, and nearly always free to attend. Knowing when they happen and where to find them lets you slip one into your evening with no planning at all.

On summer evenings, the squares of the towns around Lake Garda turn into open-air stages. Live music on Lake Garda, put on by the local councils (the comuni) and the tourist associations (the Pro Loco), means evenings of free open-air concerts spread along all three shores, from late spring to early autumn. Knowing how they work, when they happen and which towns host them helps you choose the right evening for the time of your visit.

It is one of the most direct ways to experience the lake after dark, when the waterfront cools and life moves outdoors. You need no tickets and no booking: you arrive in the square, settle in and listen.

How the open-air concerts work

Most of these evenings come out of the summer calendars drawn up by the comuni and the initiatives of the Pro Loco, the local volunteer associations that organise much of village life. Entry is free and there is nothing to book: you sit where you find a place, in the square or along the waterfront, and stay as long as you like. The music ranges from covers and tribute bands to acoustic sets, from jazz to something to dance to, pitched at a broad audience. It is the kind of thing you can add to any evening, even on a whim.

When to come: the rhythm of the season

The bulk of the programme falls in the warm months, with something on most weekends and several series running to a fixed schedule, often the same night each week. Late spring opens the calendar, summer fills it, early autumn closes it with the last of the outdoor evenings. If you want the season in full without the crush of July and August, the weeks either side of high summer give you the same warm nights with more room to breathe.

Where to find the music: the town squares

The concerts spring up all around the lake, from the Verona shore to the Brescia side and up to the northern, Trentino end. Each town chooses its own settings: the square in the old centre, the little harbour, the waterfront, sometimes a cloister or a courtyard. The calendar above shows the current dates with the location of each, so you can choose by where you are staying or by where you fancy heading for one evening.

Making an easy evening of it

The evening is the moment, once the town fills up. In summer the parking near the centre goes early and many lakefront roads are closed to traffic: it pays to arrive in good time, leave the car a little further out, or take the boat where the evening service allows. These are easy nights with children too, with open space, unhurried timings and the freedom to leave whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases entry is free, as these are events run by the comuni and the Pro Loco. You pay only for what you eat or drink at the stalls, where there are any.

When does it happen?
Mainly in the summer months, often at weekends or on a fixed weekday. The calendar on this page carries the current dates.

Do you need to book?
No. You turn up and find a spot. If you want a restaurant table the same evening, that is worth booking.

What kind of music is played?
It depends on the night: covers and tribute bands, acoustic sets, jazz, music to dance to. Each event’s programme is in the calendar.

Are they suitable for families?
Yes. Open spaces, evening timings and no entry to worry about make them easy with children in tow.

The good thing about these evenings is that they ask nothing of you in advance: you only need to know where the music is tonight. Keep an eye on the calendar through the season and let the town you happen to be in point you to the right square.
