In early October, Gargnano changes pace. The summer crowds have thinned, the ferries run less often, and the village returns to the people who live there: the terraced lemon groves above the harbour, the olive trees climbing towards the hills, the olive harvest just getting under way. This is a place that built its history on oil and citrus long before Lake Garda became a holiday destination. A weekend given over to olive oil, wine and the land, then, is nothing imposed from outside. It tells you what Gargnano has always been.
Slow Gargnano 2026: two days, one territory
Slow Gargnano, Tra olio, vino e territorio, returns on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October 2026, between the Chiostro di San Francesco and Palazzo Feltrinelli, the seat of the University of Milan in Gargnano. Saturday is given to the cooking classes and the conference, Sunday to the market, the walks through the groves and the closing aperitivo. Some experiences have limited places and need booking in advance; others you simply turn up to. Below you will find each one, with what you need to know to be there.
The walks through lemon groves and olive terraces
Sunday 4 October, with departures from the Chiostro di San Francesco at 10.00 and 14.00, brings the experience that sums up the whole event: a guided walk into the lemon groves and olive terraces that shape the hillsides of Gargnano, the landscape the oil and wine actually come from. It lasts around two hours, runs entirely on the flat and suits anyone, even if you rarely walk. Groups take from 25 to a maximum of 30 people, and the walk is run in English as well, so you can bring international guests along without any trouble. Places are limited and confirmed with a contribution of €10 per person. With only two departures across the day, this is the first thing worth booking.
The cooking classes: filled fresh pasta by hand
Saturday 3 October, at the Chiostro di San Francesco from 10.00 to 17.00, four cooking classes with limited places get your hands into the dough in the most literal sense: you learn to make filled fresh pasta by hand, with local fillings, guided step by step. This is not a tasting you watch from a chair; it is the part of a holiday that stays in your hands once you are home. Places are deliberately few and confirmed with €10 per person, which counts as your booking for the workshop.
✨ Live Lake Garda: Unique Experiences Handpicked for You
Verso il Mercato della Terra
Sunday 4 October, at the Chiostro di San Francesco from 9.00 to 17.00, “Verso il Mercato della Terra” takes shape: a producers’ market in the spirit of Slow Food’s Earth Markets, built around food that is good, clean and fair, and around the farming and food identity of the territory. The verso, “towards”, in the title is not a flourish. It marks a stated step in that direction rather than a market of ordinary goods. You come in freely, you taste, you talk to the people who grow and make what is on the stalls. No booking; just arrive.
The conference on the produce of the Alto Garda
Saturday 3 October at 17.30, in the conference hall of Palazzo Feltrinelli, the talk “I prodotti dell’Alto Garda da San Francesco ai giorni nostri” sets centuries of farming work in order, along a historical, scenic and gastronomic thread. It is the context that gives the rest its meaning: understanding where this shore’s oil and wine come from helps you read the terraces you will cross the next day. Entry is free until the hall is full, with no booking.
The aperitivo and sunset concert
The event closes on Sunday 4 October at 18.00, in the garden of Palazzo Feltrinelli, with an aperitivo of local produce and a concert at sunset. This one is by invitation and not open to general booking; we flag it as the seal on the two days rather than as a stop to reserve.
How to take part, and what to book
The rule is simple: the market and the conference you just turn up to, while the cooking classes and the guided walks have limited access and need booking. For both, a contribution of €10 per person confirms your place. Bookings are handled by the Pro Loco Gargnano: write to info@thisisgargnano.it or call 348 6591447 (or 0365 042100), stating the experience, the day and the number of people. With places this limited, moving a few days ahead is the difference between being there and missing out.
