The shortest night of the year brings with it an ancient magic to the heart of Lessinia. On June 23, 2026, the community of Giazza prepares to celebrate the Fire Festival, a millennia-old Cimbrian rite rooted in pre-Christian summer solstice traditions. On this St. John’s Night, when the sun reaches its peak of light, the village comes alive to honour the regenerative power of fire, waters, and fertile earth.
The event, known in the Cimbrian language as “Waur Ljetzan”, harks back to ancient Indo-European and Celtic customs where bonfires lit on hills were a way to ward off darkness and, with it, all evil spirits. In Giazza, this cultural heritage is renewed through an evocative programme. The evening will begin with greetings from the authorities, followed by “The Witch’s Night”, a captivating show by the Lux Arcana Artistic Company from Arezzo. This Gothic and medieval representation tells the story of a clash between a witch and an inquisitor, a tapestry of flames, magic, and acrobatics culminating in a dark and spectacular trial.

The culmination of the celebration arrives with the portrayal of Lessinia‘s myths and legends and the lighting of thirteen braziers, a powerful symbol of the unity of the ancient Cimbrian Communes. Around these fires, the ancient promise of fortune and protection is renewed, as songs and dances fill the air. To facilitate access to this unique experience, a shuttle bus will be available from 7:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Caution is advised for those bringing dogs, given the crowds, fires, and intense music.
