Discovering Cassone, an enchanting village on Lake Garda, which is home to the shortest river in the world.

Cassone, an enchanting village overlooking the Venetian shore of Lake Garda, is crossed by the Aril, the shortest river in the world.

Cassone is a delightful village located along the “Riviera degli Ulivi”, fifty kilometers of Mediterranean vegetation which, protected by the mild climate, allows palms, citrus and olive trees to thrive and give a renowned production of DOP extra virgin olive oil.

It is more precisely a fraction, of a few hundred inhabitants, of the municipality of Malcesine, from which it is only 4 km away, also along the beautiful north-eastern cycle and pedestrian path that follows the shores of the lake.

We would like to point out that before arriving in Malcesine you will also cross the suggestive Val di Sogno, sheltered in an inlet of the Garda, which offers nature and beaches of unique beauty.

What to see in a day trip in Cassone di Malcesine on Lake Garda.

The town is made up of houses, bridges and alleys that create an atmosphere of the past and very romantic .

The port of Cassone di Malcesine is the most characteristic attraction of the village. Perfectly preserved and adorned with colorful fishing boats moored there, it houses an ancient tower which stands out in front of the lake called “Toresela” and also the small “ Museum of the lake and fishing “. Here are exhibited the tools of ancient fishing, tools of daily work, photos of sailing boats of the past, and also of the tanks with some fish species: trout, chub and eels that recall the destination of this building in the past for the fish farming. Admission is free (open from April to September from Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-12.00 – 15.00-18.00; from November to March only on Sunday 10.00-12.00 – 15.00-18.00; for information you can contact the number 339.540.93.43).

You can visit the eighteenth century church dedicated to S. Benigno and Caro , located in the upper part of the town, and last but not least the course of the Aril river which , with its only 175 meters in length, it boasts the posting of the “shortest river in the world” sign.

It is one of the rivers that flow into Lake Garda, and crosses Cassone after being born in a spring in the heart of the town. It gushes out forming a small basin of water in which trout arrive to lay their eggs going upstream (today it is a protected reserve from fishing).

Small but strong, the Aril between the end of the nineteenth century and 1913 powered a power plant and two mills.

In addition, this river is also an obligatory stop during the Christmas period, when the most beautiful floating nativity scene of the entire Lake Garda is set up (always in the same period we suggest you also stop in Campo di Brenzone, a few km further south, to visit another beautiful exhibition of outdoor nativity scenes from all over the world).

Cassone is home to popular festivals and gastronomic events including the best known is the “Cyclamen Festival” which takes place in August with the traditional “Regata delle Bisse” during which competes with these typical rowing boats.

It also houses a wonderful statue in bronze from 1987, by the sculptor Luisa Granero depicting a bather.

The timeless charm of Cassone di Malcesine & nbsp; inspired, in the summer of 1913, the Viennese painter Gustav Klimt & nbsp; who, during his stay on the Garda, painted two of his paintings most famous of the landscape style “The church in Cassone”, kept in Rome in the National Gallery of Modern Art, and “Malcesine on Lake Garda” which was destroyed in a fire in 1945.

Cassone is a village to be discovered in any season you visit. It is also worth a stop for lunch or dinner above the Aril River , in one of the most romantic and one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
